The Golden Compass {His Dark Materials #1}

Published Date: January 1, 1995
Author: Philip Pullman
Pages: 399
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy

Many times I start a book/series and have no clue that my brain is about to be blown wide open. This book was no exception. The world, characters and events that Philip Pullman creates are extraordinary. Lyra was such a strong, bold main character. His creation of daemons {which are an external representation of the person’s soul, basically} was so neat; I want a daemon. I loved the alternate world Pullman dreamt up; his use of the Aurora made his other worldly creation quite real.

I’m not sure I can gush any more about this book. There are talking bears and gypsies, adventure and magic. It’s brilliant story telling.

You, your kids, everyone should read this. I will say, though, that the movie SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED BALLS. It was terrible. Do not watch the movie unless you want to waste precious moments of your life.

Ps. I finished this book 3 weeks ago. Talk about book reading/reviewing slacking at it’s finest.

  1. I love your edition of The Golden Compass; it’s so pretty! I still have this one on my TBR pile, but your review definitely made me want to move it towards the top… I didn’t enjoy the movie that much, so it is good to know the book is way better. 😀

  2. It is a great book, isn’t it. I would be interested to hear what you think of the sequels as I think they are all very different to each other. Lyra is a fantastic character – one of my favourites.
