The literary sensation of the year, a book that redefines both family and narrative for the twenty-first century. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the moving memoir of a college senior who, in the space of five weeks, loses both of his parents to cancer and inherits his eight-year-old brother. Here is an exhilarating debut that manages to be simultaneously hilarious and wildly inventive as well as a deeply heartfelt story of the love that holds a family together.
– Summary from Amazon

This is more of a rant than a review. I honest to goodness have no clue how I feel about this book. Dave Eggers, what were you on when you wrote this book? Laughing gas? Speed? Crack? A sugar high? I felt manic while reading it. I felt like at any moment I was going to haul off and slap whoever came near me out of sheer frustration and craziness. I get it, Dave. Your book is one big hyperbole. You’re so funny and witty and hilarious that you had me laughing when really I should have been feeling sorry for you and your orphaned siblings. But I didn’t feel sorry for you. You seemed like a d-bag. You made what should be a heartbreaking story into an ADHD person’s worst nightmare. I was too thrown by the juking and flashbacks and crazy talk that I had no idea what the hell was going on. *rolls eyes so hard it gives me a headache*

At one point in the book Eggers says:

“I am making our lives a music video, a game show on Nickelodeon- lots of quick cuts, crazy camera angles, fun, fun, fun! It’s a campaign of distraction and revisionist history- leaflets dropped behind enemy lines, fireworks, funny dances, magic tricks. Whassat? Lookie there! Where’d it go?”

And to me, the above quote described this book perfectly. He made their lives exactly that with this book.

But…it was funny and witty and hilarious. That’s where the stars come in {it needed stars per Goodreads so I gave it 3}. I can’t really even review this properly. I can only say that it was entertaining. I can’t really recommend this book because I have no idea who to recommend it to. *sigh* oh well.

So yeah…if you want a book that makes you say to yourself, “Self, what the hell is going on here?” and makes you laugh out loud, then this is your book!

    • Great description. A well written disaster indeed. This one has gotten a ton of accolades yet the reviews are either love it or hate it to death.
      Haha, thank you ma’am.

Off topic, can I follow you on booklikes without joining it? Or do you have a blog?
