Okay…so…I read this book in one sitting. I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be devoured so quickly but between the witty dialogue {there was a lot of it} and the interesting plot, it was hard to stop reading. It wasn’t the best book in the history of ever but it was definitely unputdownable. My curiosity for what happened next kept me up waaaaaaay past my bedtime. *yawns* I regret nothing. Overall, this one gets 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is about a girl named Mara Dyer who -after losing her best friend, boyfriend and quasi-friend in a horrific accident- moves from Rhode Island to Miami with her family to start anew. She is enrolled in a fancy shmancy school chock-full of your typical high schoolers: the super rich & handsome boy {who inevitably will sweep our MC off her feet, right?}, the mean girl who was scorned by said super rich & handsome boy, the quirky bff…all this sound familiar? Well, good. It should. It fits the bill of most highschool based novels. Girl meets boy, girl is warned by bff not to like said boy because he’s got a reputation of being a man-whore, girl ignores boy’s advances but he will not leave her alone, girl ultimately ingores bff’s warning and allows said boy to court her. Of course, all of this attention makes Mara seem special!! {I was only mildly annoyed with this predictable plot line…if you couldn’t tell}

But the truth is, Mara is special…and so is her new love interest. She makes things happen…and so does he. Over the course of this story you find out a bunch of crazy shiz, and the twisty-turney nature of this book makes it worth reading. Yes there were few moments that left me shaking my head! Yes I was reminded of Twilight during the whole cute-guy-is-bringing-the-loner-new-girl-to-school-and-everyone-is-staring scene. BUT!! It was still really good {I particularly loved Mara’s brothers – so funny!!} I’ll be going to the bookstore tonight to buy the sequel. Stay tuned for that review which hopefully I’ll have by this weekend!

So, if you like reading books that are heavy on the first time love, mysterious deaths, apparitions, hallucinations and witty banter, then this book is for you! Plus the cover alone makes this book worth getting!

  1. I read this book before I started up my book blog so I didn’t review it properly. I plan on buying books 2 and 3 together and then marathoning the whole series- all I can say is THE EARRING SCENE. OOOOH. All of the intense confusion with Mara made up for the annoying lovey dovey stuff for me haha

    • Oh this series. Oh I just love it!!!! Yes there are lots of annoying lovey dovey scenes for sure but you’re right- Mara’s mystery makes up for it. The second book blew my mind wide open and I’m antsy for the third!!
